The Role of Active IQ & Stretch Body Training as a Provider
What is Active IQ?
Active IQ is a leading awarding organization in the UK’s health, fitness, and wellness sector. It is regulated by Ofqual, ensuring that qualifications meet the highest industry standards. Active IQ:
✅ Sets the qualification framework – defining the curriculum, learning outcomes, and assessment criteria.
✅ Ensures national and international recognition – making your certification credible and widely accepted.
✅ Provides external verification – ensuring fairness, consistency, and quality across all training providers.
My Role as the Training Provider – Stretch Body Training
At Stretch Body Training, we are responsible for delivering the Level 3 Pilates Teacher Training course in line with Active IQ’s requirements. Our role includes:
✔ High-Quality Teaching & Support – Ensuring students gain the knowledge and practical skills to qualify confidently.
✔ Assessment Preparation – Helping students meet Active IQ’s assessment criteria through guided learning, mock assessments, and case studies.
✔ Professional & Ethical Standards – Upholding industry professionalism, ensuring fairness, and maintaining the integrity of the qualification.
Together, Active IQ provides the qualification framework, and Stretch Body Training delivers expert tuition and support to help you succeed as a fully qualified Pilates instructor.
Catherine (Cat) is the founder of Stretch-Body Training, a Level 3 Pilates tutor, mental health educator, and self-published author. A former competitive figure skater, she returned to the ice after 27 years—sharing her journey on TikTok at @ThawedSkater27. Cat blends movement, creativity, and wellbeing in everything she does, from delivering inspiring courses to writing fiction like The Santa Cruz Supernaturals. Her book Pilates the Stretch-Body Way brings a fresh, holistic approach to instructor training.
Sue's role as the internal verifier at Stretch-Body Training is crucial to maintaining the organization's high standards, fairness, and professionalism. Her responsibility involves overseeing the training programs and ensuring that they meet the required benchmarks and quality standards. With her extensive experience as a Pilates instructor and a highly accomplished fit pro, Sue brings a wealth of knowledge and expertise to her role.
Beyond her work at Stretch-Body Training, Sue has an impressive background as an equestrian, showcasing her versatility and passion for various physical activities. Her specialization in pre-and post-natal exercise, diabetes and exercise, outdoor activity, and mental health education highlights her dedication to promoting health and wellbeing across different populations.
Given her diverse skill set and wealth of experience, Sue has earned the admiration and respect of her colleagues and students. Cat affectionately refers to Sue as "The Rock," likely because of her unwavering commitment and dependable nature. Sue's presence and contributions are invaluable to the success and reputation of Stretch-Body Training, making her an essential pillar of support and expertise within the organization.

At Stretch Body Training, assessments are designed to ensure that all students meet the high standards set by Active IQ. The qualification is made up of seven units, covering both theoretical knowledge and practical skills.
Assessment Methods
To achieve your certification, you will be assessed through a combination of:
✔ Worksheets – Testing your understanding of Pilates principles, anatomy, and physiology.
✔ Theory Exams – Multiple-choice or written assessments covering key topics.
✔ Case Study – Applying your knowledge to assess a client’s needs, perform postural and functional assessments, and design a tailored Pilates programme.
✔ Practical Assessment – Demonstrating your ability to instruct and apply Pilates exercises effectively.
Some mandatory units may have been completed in previous qualifications (e.g., Anatomy & Physiology from a Level 3 Personal Training course). If applicable, these can be signed off as pre-passed, reducing the number of assessments required.
All assessments are conducted by an Active IQ-approved assessor and are then second-marked by an Internal Verifier (IV). This process ensures:
✅ Fair, unbiased assessment for all students.
✅ No student passes unfairly due to poor marking, bias, or inappropriate behaviour.
✅ The qualification maintains its high professional standard in the industry.
It is essential to respect the integrity of the assessment process. Any attempt to:
❌ Bully, bribe, or coerce an assessor will result in immediate expulsion from the course.
❌ Serious misconduct may lead to legal
consequences.
❌ Unprofessional behaviour during assessments will not be tolerated.
Appeals Procedure
Steps:
Appeals Procedure
•If you disagree with an assessment decision and wish to appeal:
•Submit a formal letter to the assessor within 7 days, clearly outlining your reasons.
•The assessor will attempt to resolve the issue. If unresolved, contact the Internal Verifier, Sue Bruce-Burgess, via email. £60 non-refundable administration fee applies for this service.
•The IV will respond within 14 days of receipt and attempt to resolve the issue. If still unresolved, Active IQ’s external verifier will conduct another investigation within 20 days.
•A £150 non-refundable administration fee applies for appealing to the External Verifier.
Outcome:
• Appeals do not result in a refund.• Strict adherence to Active IQ’s assessment standards.
1️⃣ Theoretical Preparation
✔ Complete all worksheets and revision materials before your exams.
✔ Understand key anatomy & physiology concepts—not just memorize.
✔ Practice answering exam-style questions to build confidence.
2️⃣ Practical Preparation
✔ Rehearse your teaching techniques—film yourself if needed.
✔ Ensure you can apply modifications for different clients.
✔ Be confident in the original 34 Pilates exercises and their progressions.
3️⃣ Mindset & Stress Management
✔ Manage nerves with deep breathing techniques before your assessment.
✔ Reframe failure as a learning opportunity—stay positive and professional.
✔ Get enough sleep & eat well before assessment days to stay focused.
By preparing thoroughly and respecting the professional standards of Active IQ, you will be in the best position to successfully qualify as a Level 3 Pilates instructor.
Your certification is earned through knowledge, skill, and professionalism—so give it your best!
Loved my course and it was fun! Cat demonstrated everything, all the exercises. Even when she was tired and we wanted her to re-demonstrate an exercise, she would just get on with it. Hard core!
I now teach Pilates in the USA, I did all my training through Stretch. Cat instilled the Pilates ethos of alignment , breathing and centring in me, but encouraged me to find my own style and to always explore, create and grow. She’s unique, what can I say!
Ballet.Pilates.with.lucy. “Fabulous course, fabulous teacher, highly recommend.”
